Wolf Plates
The Wolf Plate is named after a driver who suffered severe spinal injuries from a brake disc cutting through his seat during a crash. During the crash, his seat was pushed back into the spinning brake rotor, which promptly cut through his fiberglass seat and immediately cut through his body. To prevent this sort of catastrophe in the future, the Wolf Plate was born.
The Wolf Plate is simply a metal plate that is mounted between the driver's seat and the brake rotor. It is most commonly connected to the brake housing, but can be attached however it works best for the driver.
In the case of a crash where the seat is pushed back or the axle is pushed forward, the rotating rotor will come in contact with the metal plate and not be able to penetrate into the fiberglass seat (and consequently, the driver's back!). We have half a dozen drivers we know who have been senselessly injured this way. And now there is a simple, cost-effective way to prevent it.
The picture on this page is of an actual customer's kart from Road America 2006. The driver backed the kart into a wall, pushing the axle and rotor forward. Fortunately, they were equipped with a Wolf Plate which the rotor hit and could not penetrate. Instead of a serious, crippling injury, the driver walked away, not even realizing at first that the plate just saved them from a horrible injury.
